Result of Friendly Match V Ashford (Middlesex), Played on Sunday 3rd May 2026
London Welsh won on 2 Rinks, lost on 2 Rinks and Tied a Rink. After 5 Ends, a strong start from 2 Welsh Rinks saw the Welsh lead 21-13. However, our hosts played themselves into the game and at 10 Ends, the Welsh trailed 43-46. The Welsh rallied back to lead 74-60 after 15 Ends. This margin remained constant for the remainder of the match, with the Welsh winning by 14 Shots, 86-72 after 18 Ends.
Rink 1 – Glyn Taylor, Peter Tottman & Don Davies – 12-18
A slightly tense start saw 5 singles scored in the first 5 Ends, with the Welsh trailing 2-3. The hosts then found their range and steadily increased their lead with the Welsh trailing 5-11 after 10 Ends. The Welsh fought back but the gap remained consistent, trailing 9-15 at 15 Ends. A count if 3 on the 17 th End gave the Welsh hope, but ultimately, they lost by 6 shots.
Rink 2 – Gail Evans, Matthew Tambling & James Hill – 21-12
A flying start from the President’s Rink saw the Welsh leading 10-0 after 5 Ends. However, the Ashford Rink then found form and closed the gap with the Welshleading 12-8 at 10 Ends. A tense exchange of singles followed as the Welsh led 15-10 after 15 Ends. A count of 5 on the 18 th End put the gloss on a fine display of bowls for the Welsh to win by 9 shots.
Rink 3 – Steve Hill, Elizabeth Platt & Stephen Brinkworth – 17-21
A steady start saw the Welsh trailing 2-5 after 5 Ends. Both Teams then found scoring form as 15 shots were scored over 5 ends, but the Welsh were trailing 10-12 after 10 Ends. Another 12 shots were scored over Ends 11 through 15, seeing the Welsh draw level at 17-17 after 15 Ends. However, the Welsh lost the last 3 Ends to lose by 4 shots.
Rink 4 – Miles Harvey, Rhiannon Hill & Tim Davies – 14-14
A slower start than other rinks saw the Welsh trailing 1-5 after 5 Ends. The team played themselves in over the next few Ends but were still trailing 5-12 at 10 Ends. A strong start to the second half saw the Welsh outscore the Ashford Rink by 6 shots, closing the gap right up and trailing by 1 shot at 15 ends, 12-13. A good finish saw the Welsh win 2 of the last 3 Ends to tie the Rink.
Rink 5 – Keith O’Dell, Clive Brooks & Vincent Jones – 22-7 (Top Rink)
Another strong starting Welsh Rink, leading 6-0 after 5 Ends. The Welsh Rink continued to build and led 11-3 at 10 Ends. There was no relenting of the pressure as the Welsh outscored the Ashford Rink 10-2 over Ends 11 through 15 to lead 21-5 after 15 Ends. Although losing 2 of the last 3 Ends, the Welsh ran out winners by 15 shots.
